The American Battle Monuments Commission establishes the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Carthage, after the French protectorate and Tunisian authorities granted the land for use in perpetuity. The 11-hectare memorial holds the remains of 2,841 American service members who died during Operation Torch.
